June 3, National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Dear Elementary Families,

The district communicated about wearing orange to bring awareness to gun violence prevention. We understand this can be tricky for elementary age students and families as younger students, especially, have been shielded from the tragedy and recent events across the country. It is tough because many elementary staff and students have been greatly impacted by the tragedy on November 30. While as a district we are recognizing Friday as National Gun Violence Awareness day, we do not plan to make any announcements or call deliberate attention to it. A possible suggestion for elementary families, especially of DK-2 students,  is that you explain the wearing of orange as a way to remind everyone to be nice and kind to one another. We think this approach keeps with the general theme and does not get into the more intense message of gun violence.

Educationally Yours,

Jeff Brown, Principal OES
